Watching the southern sky

No light pollution: the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds, and, with luck, the aurora australis.

A few kilometers outside any of these cities, there’s no artificial light left. On clear winter nights both Magellanic Clouds are visible to the naked eye, and in Magallanes—beyond 53° south—the aurora australis appears every now and then.

Summer has the opposite problem: in January it doesn’t get fully dark until after eleven at night. For stargazing, choose the autumn and winter months.
