Chile’s only king penguin colony

At Bahía Inútil, a hundred kilometers of gravel road from Porvenir, on an estancia (sheep ranch) in Tierra del Fuego.

The king penguin is the second-largest penguin species in the world, and this colony, established in 2010, is the only one in Chile. It’s viewed from platforms about thirty meters away, with set visiting hours and limited spots: it’s a small colony, and any repeated disturbance can cost it the breeding season.

You can’t enter the colony, and drones aren’t allowed. You can drive there yourself from Porvenir or take a full-day tour from Punta Arenas, crossing the strait by ferry.
