Walking among penguins on Isla Magdalena

Isla Magdalena, in the middle of the Strait, where a roped-off trail passes right by the nests of Magellanic penguins.

A roped-off trail leads from the beach to the lighthouse, and the penguins cross in front of you without batting an eye. The colony has shrunk sharply in recent decades: CONAF (Chile’s national parks service) estimated about 7,000 pairs in 2025. You get there by boat from the Tres Puentes terminal, passing Isla Marta and its sea lions.

Only between October and March: the rest of the year the colony is at sea and there’s nothing to see on the island. There’s also a colony at Seno Otway, closer and smaller.
