From Coyhaique to Villa O’Higgins it’s 570 kilometers, and there’s no way to hurry. Along the way are Villa Cerro Castillo, the Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol) at Puerto Río Tranquilo, the confluence of the Baker and the Neff, and Caleta Tortel, with cypress boardwalks instead of streets.
The road is paved as far as Villa Cerro Castillo; farther south gravel predominates, with sections gradually being paved. Fuel up in every town, carry a spare tire in good condition, and budget travel times generously.
